JAMES TARRANT : NEW YORK MEDICINE NEW UPDATE In 1835 a James Tarrant started a drug store in New York City. By 1839 he would start manufacturing his own brands of medicine. One of his first was called Opiata Balsamic and Extract of Capiaba and Sarsaparilla. James son John A. Tarrant would take over the drug manufacturing sometime in the 1850s. He would become an agent for Dr. Grover Coe's medicines. By 1871 H. M. Billings would become the proprietor of the Tarrant & Company. Under H. M. Billings leadership the company would have 12 items patented between 1885 and 1899. In 1862 or 1863 the firm would become the Tarrant & Company and in 1884 the company produced Tarrant's Effervescent Seltzer Aperient. Below is an early open pontil bottle.
