CHARLES GULDEN: MUSTARD Charles Gulden was born in New York City on September 23 1843. Around 1860 he went to work for his uncle George C. Gelsson who was a German immigrant. George owned the business called Union Mustard Mill. The business was located at 123 Mott Street in New York City. Charles gulden would enlist in the Union Army serving with the reserve regiment at Gettysburg in 1963. After a 30 day military service he went back to work with his uncle in the mustard business. Charles Gulden first appeared in the 1868-1869 New York City directory establishing is own business. This business was located at 63 Elizabeth Street. His advertising states "Established 1867". In 1869 Gulden would enter his Mustard at the "American Institute of the City of New York for the Encouragement of Science and Invention". It operated an annual fair were exhibitors could submit an entry. He would achieve a second place award. Gulden would go on to win several other awards with his mustard in 1883. Also in 1893 the World's Fair in Chicago and the 1900 Paris Exposition along with many other awards. By 1883 Gulden's product line included 30 mustard varieties, olives capers, cottonseed oil, catsup, Warwickshire sauce. . . ..
