ZIEN BROTHERS CO. : BERLINGER MAGEN BITTERS Jacob D. Zien would open a saloon along with J. R. Duff in 1889 in Duluth, Wisconsin. His partner J. R. Duff would leave the saloon business with Jacob in 1895. Like many saloon owners in them days Jacob would become a liquor wholesale dealer in 1898. His would call his firm Berlinger Magen Bitters Co. "J. D. Zien Co." This business was located in Duluth, Wisconsin. By 1900 Jacob would start another business with his younger brother Isaac at 300 3 rd. and then move to 689 - 691 3 rd. Milwaukee. They would call this business the Zien Brothers Co. It is thought that both locations used the same bottle. BERLINGER MAGEN / BITTERS CO. Below is a photo of this bottle. Another brand they had was ALTER BISMARK MAGEN BITTERS. Jacob would die in 1909 at the age of 52. His half brother Morris and Morriss son would relocate from Milwaukee to Duluth to run the Duluth operation.
