SHERMAN PRIMLEY:PRIMLEY'S IRON AND WAHOO TONIC & PRIMLEY'S SARSAPARILLA & PRIMLEY'S SPEDDY CURE Jacob Primley was born in Pennsylvania in May 18 1814 and would die in 1875. Jacob would marry Sarah Hitchmer from Mercer county Ohio in 1840. The couple would move to Elkhart, Indiana. in 1845. Jacob was involved in a grocery business and dry goods in Elkhart. Together they would have ten children. Out of the ten children two of them would be involved in the manufacturing of medicines. This brief article is about Sherman Primley. Sherman Primley was born on April 26 1864 and would die in Jan 30 1928 of ulcers of the stomach. He was a clerk in his brother's drug store which was located at 623 S. Main Street and Tyler Ave. In 1885 he would purchase the drug store business from his brother Jonathon P. Primley. Jonathon Primley who would know concentrated in manufacturing of patent medicines. It appears that when Jonathon Primley moved to Chicago in 1891 to get more involved with his gum manufacturing he put Sherman in charge of the Jones & Primley Laboratory on E. Franklin Street in Elkhart. In 1893 to 1895 Sherman would move to Chicago to become the proprietor of a cigar store. He would move back to Elkhart in Nov. 14 1895 to engage back in the manufacturing of medicines at the Jones & Primley Laboratory. This time he is not the manager for his brother Jonathon but as the owner of the firm. According to the 1896 Sanborn Map of Elkhart Sherman was the owner of the Sherman Primley Patents medicines. Sherman would get married to Florence M. in Milwaukee, Wis. on June 1 1897. Sherman would relocate his medicine plant to Milwaukee on June 2 1897. He thought he could do more business in the cream city. Sherman Primley who was a pharmisist would purchase his brothers drug store Jonathon Primley in July 1 1885. According to the Elkhart Daily Review from July 1885. This address was 623 South Main Street Elkhart. Indiana. The Sherman Primley bottles are exactly the same as his brother Jonathon Primley bottles. His brother Jonathon bottles are only embossed Elkhart, Indiana. At some point Sherman moved to Wisconsion and then to Illinois . There are embossed bottles from Milwaukee, Wis. and also Peoria, Ill. The Milwaukee location was 306 e. Waters Street. Milwaukee, Wis. According to the 1902 Pharmacentcal Era Vol. 27. The Peoria location was located at 424 s. Washington Street Peoria, Ill. According to the 1911 Era Druggist Directory Vol. 15.
