JOHN SAMEUL CARTER: CARTER'S LIVER BITTERS Samuel Carter was a native of Erie Pa. In 1832 the Brown Medicine Company was founded in Erie, Pa. This is where Dr. Carter would start making his family medicines. At some point unknown he would relocate to New York and start the Carter Medicine Company which was located at 35 & 37 Park Place. John S. Carter would incorporate the business in 1880. He would pass away in 1884. His son Samuel Jr. would take over the Firm. The brand name Dr. Carter's would last for over 100 years.
